How do I check a device’s Join Type in Entra ID?

Issue

Staff or IT technicians need to verify a device’s join state to assist with troubleshooting sign‑in, Intune enrollment, policy application, or identity‑related issues.


Environment

  • Windows 10 or Windows 11 devices
  • Microsoft Entra Admin Center
  • Devices synced or managed through Entra ID / Intune

Resolution

1. Sign in to the Entra Admin Center

  1. Navigate to https://entra.microsoft.com
  2. Sign in with your admin account.

2. Open the Devices List

  1. In the left‑hand navigation panel, select Devices.
  2. Click All devices.
  3. Search for the device using:
    • Device name
    • User (via filters)

3. Check the Join Type

  1. Click the device name to open its details.
  2. Locate the Join type field.
    • Azure AD joined — Cloud‑joined; typically managed by Intune.
    • Hybrid Azure AD joined — Joined to on‑premises AD and synced to Entra.
    • Azure AD registered — User‑based registration (BYOD/workplace join).
  3. (Optional) Review:
    • MDM enrollment (e.g., Intune)
    • Compliance status
    • Last check‑in
    • Primary user
