What Is It?

Technology Solutions offers two types of relational database management systems (RDBMS) that support multiple databases and allows multiple people to access each one. Microsoft SQL is Microsoft’s proprietary relational database server; its primary query languages are T-SQL and ANSI SQL. MySQL databases are a popular choice for web applications, particularly ones running on a LAMP stack (Linux, Apache, MySQL, Perl/PHP/Python).


Our MS SQL databases include

  • MS SQL 2019
  • Service Accounts can be created, or use UIC Active Directory accounts to access your database
  • SQL Server Management Studio is available for download from Microsoft to manage your MS SQL database

Our MySQL databases include:


MS SQL databases are available to departments for University business, while MySQL databases are available for departments or individual staff or students for a variety of uses.

Please note that accessing the MySQL database management system off-campus requires logging into UIC's Virtual Private Network (VPN) service.


We can normally accommodate small to medium-sized databases without any problems, but we may need to account for larger databases with special hardware or setup scenarios.

How Much Does It Cost?

MS SQL has no cost to clients for the first 30GB of storage. There is an additional cost of $0.10 per GB per month for any additional storage. 

MySQL databases are funded by the University; there are no direct costs to clients.
