Kaltura: Add a Video to Kaltura Media

Upload

The Upload option is for videos that you've pre-recorded outside of Kaltura Capture, and the file is saved on your computer. To add this video to Kaltura (My Media), follow these steps:

1. In Canvas, click on My Media (folder icon with play button) in the blue, global navigation menu.
2. In the upper right corner of the page, select the Create drop-down list, and choose Upload to open the Upload Media page.
3. Click the + Choose a file to upload button to search your computer for the media file you would like to upload. Select the file, then click the Open button to being uploading the file. Alternatively, you can drag and drop a file into the Upload Media box.
4. While the file is uploading, you may add additional information about your video, including the following:
   • Name: The name of the media being uploaded. This is a required field and is, by default, the filename of the media being uploaded. We recommend that you include information about the course and/or module for which you plan to use this video to keep things organized.
   • Description: This is displayed below the media or on the player info pane. This is a required field for publishing and/or adding the media to a playlist.
   • Tags: These are used to help describe your media and are used as keywords when searching for media. Multiple tags can be separated by commas or new lines.
5. When you have finished editing details, click the Save button.
6. Once the media has uploaded, you can add it to your course materials.

Capture

The Capture option allows you to record a video using the Kaltura Capture software, which can then be added to your course. If you are using Kaltura Capture to record your videos, you should follow the instructions for recording using Kaltura Capture provided by ITS. If you follow the instructions provided, your Kaltura videos should appear in My Media in Canvas and can then be added to your courses.

YouTube

The YouTube option allows you to add public YouTube videos to Kaltura. This is highly recommended for YouTube videos where the captions are not accurate and would require captioning. To add a YouTube video to Kaltura (My Media), follow these steps:

1. Open the YouTube video in your browser. Copy the URL for the YouTube video.
2. In a new tab, open Canvas.
3. In Canvas, click on My Media (folder icon with play button) in the blue, global navigation menu.
4. In the upper right corner of the page, select the Create drop-down list, and choose YouTube.
5. Paste the YouTube URL into the box that appears, then click Preview.
6. This will load in details from YouTube, including the name of the video and the video description. Feel free to edit any details on this page. Specifically, it might be helpful to edit the name of the video to include course/module information for organization purposes.
7. When you have finished editing details, click the Save button. You can now add this video to your courses.
