What Is It?

Box AI is a generative AI-powered feature integrated into UIC’s Box cloud storage platform. It enables users to ask questions about the content inside their documents and receive intelligent summaries, insights, and contextual responses, directly within the Box interface. This service empowers UIC to work more efficiently by streamlining how they understand, extract, and interact with data stored in Box.

• Ask natural language questions about documents stored in Box (e.g., “What are the main points of this file?”)

• Generate summaries of long PDFs, Word documents, and text files

• Extract structured data, key action items, or tone analysis from unstructured content

• Access Box AI tools directly within the Box web interface (no installation required)

• Logs are not stored or retrained on; Box AI adheres to strict privacy and security protocols

• Box AI has been reviewed and assessed for security and privacy risks. One identified risk is clients being unaware of who has access to their Box data. To mitigate this, clients are responsible for monitoring access to their data and ensuring that only the appropriate people have permission.

• Approved for use with all university data. Special circumstances may arise with the use of Box AI and PHI, PII, and FERPA data. Please consult with your immediate supervisor to discuss if Box AI can or cannot be used in your work. If you are not sure, please send an email with your inquiry to security@uic.edu.

• Must access via supported web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge)

• Only usable with files you have read access to

Where Can I Get It?

As a first step for all AI tools, individuals must opt in to using these tools by reviewing and accepting the UIC AI Risk Acceptance Terms via Opt In to UIC AI Tools.

Additionally, verify you have a UIC Box account by logging in to box.uic.edu. If you do not, request a Box account.

Once your opt-in request has been processed and you have confirmed you have a UIC Box account, you will be able to access Box AI at box.uic.edu.
