Software for Research Computing

What Is It?

Researchers increasingly rely on a multitude of software packages to analyze their data. ACER already provides access to hundreds of open-source software such as R, Python, TensorFlow through its High-Performance Computing and Analytics Platforms. However, researchers in need of specialized software can still request the installation of additional packages on our systems.

Installation requests are handled on a first-come, first-served basis. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee a fixed turnaround time for software installations due to possible backlogs of requests, complexity of the software, generalization of the software for the broader community, etc. We therefore strongly recommend that users first try installing the software they need in their own personal or shared directories before requesting a software installation by the ACER staff.

Features

A listing of the installed applications can be found on the available software page* or obtained by running the command module avail‘  on Extreme/SABER. Listed below is a sampling of some of the available packages.

  • Programming Languages: C, C++, Fortran, Python
  • Math, Data Analysis, and Plotting: BLAS, FFTW
  • Statistics: R, Rstudio, SAS
  • Parallel Programming: MPI, OpenMP, OpenACC, CUDA

*Note: You will need to connect to the UIC VPN prior to accessing this webpage.

Requirements

Software must Linux compatible. Requests must include the following information:

  • Name of the software package
  • The version of the software
  • URL of the download link
  • Any other information pertinent to the installation (e.g. compiler flags, variants and flavor, etc.)

Who Is Eligible To Use It?

All users of our HPC systems may request a software installation.

Where Can I Get It?

Select the Request Software button located on this page.

How Much Does It Cost?

Installation of software is provided free of charge by ACER. However, please note that ACER does not fund commercial software. Users wanting to have commercial software deployed on our HPC systems are responsible for the costs associated with licensing. For more information, please visit the ACER Applications webpage.

How Can I Get Support?

If you are experiencing a problem with a software package, please report it. If you just have a question, feel free to ask us.
