What can I do if I am having trouble accessing UIC resources from outside the US?

Tags VPN remote

If you are having trouble accessing UIC resources such as Blackboard, email, and more, from outside of the US, try using the UIC VPN solution.

If you have never used the UIC VPN before, instructions are located at go.uic.edu/VPNInstructions

  • It is generally recommended to use Duo Push notifications as your 2-Factor Authentication method since this option will not require a call/text to a valid phone number, but your needs may vary if you are out of the country.  Information about 2-Factor Authentication can be found here: accc.uic.edu/services/security/authentication/2fa/

When you are connecting to the VPN, be sure to use the Library-Resources group rather than General-Use.

  • Instructions on selecting a VPN group can be found at What group should I use for AnyConnect VPN?
  • Using the Library-Resources group will route ALL of your internet traffic through UIC's VPN.
  • If you are trying to access departmental resources such as a remote desktop connection to an office computer or a file share, you will need to switch to the General-Use group.

Blackboard is UIC's learning management system for course-related activities and grade reporting.
The Virtual Private Network service allows you to securely access resources at UIC over a non-UIC Internet connection. While connected to the VPN, the client software works with the operating system to determine when you are accessing an Internet location that the client should protect. When you are accessing such a location, the VPN client encrypts the data.
