What are the options to move my legacy line to Zoom Phone?

What’s happening

Your phone number is moving from the university’s legacy phone network to Zoom Phone. This upgrade helps modernize service and support better features going forward. As of October 15, 2025, the university's legacy (Centrex) telephony provider has initiated an end-of-service process for its traditional analog telephone services. At UIC, these analog services are mostly used on for fax machines, alarms, and other special cases where Internet-based services have not yet been implemented.

Will my service be interrupted?

Possibly—but only briefly.

To keep your existing number, your line must be transferred between carriers as part of the upgrade. During that transfer, there may be a short period when calls do not work (incoming and/or outgoing calls may be disrupted).

Technology Solutions will work to minimize or avoid any interruption, but a brief outage can happen.

Why can the timing change?

We receive a planned transfer date from our carrier partners, but that date can shift at the last minute. We will communicate updates when we can, but some changes may occur with little notice.

What Technology Solutions will do

When the transfer is completed, our team will move your line into Zoom Phone as soon as it becomes available, restoring service on the upgraded system.

Option to avoid downtime completely: get a new number

If you are open to using a new phone number, we can usually set you up right away on Zoom Phone—with no interruption to your ability to make/receive calls.

If uninterrupted availability is critical (on-call roles), we strongly encourage choosing a new number.

What we need from you

Please choose one of the following:

  1. Keep my current number (may have a brief interruption during the transfer).

  2. Get a new number (typically no downtime; we can activate quickly).
