Recommended rules for Password Creation and Password Sync

Recommended Password Creation & Sync Guidance

Create passwords 16 characters or longer

Institutional passwords and rules are managed at the NetID Center, please see article: What are the requirements for a UIC NetID password?

However, we have discovered that shorter passwords (12-15 characters) can be unsuccessful when accessing some services.  To avoid potential problems, please follow the suggested recommendations:

  1. Password Length: Create passwords with 16 or more characters to avoid potential access issues.

  2. Character Composition: Use a combination of letters and numbers rather than special characters.

We have found that passwords that meet these standards work best.

If your password is 16 characters or longer and you are having difficulty accessing services, please try the following troubleshooting steps:

  1. Check the UIC Service Status page to see if there are known password creation problems, under Information Security.

  2. If there are no known password creation or authentication problems, please attempt a Password Sync by following listed steps on article: How do I sync my university NetID password?

  3. Clear browser cache and cookies. How do I clear browser cache and cookies?

  4. If none of the above steps resolve the problem, please reach out to Technology Solutions at it.uic.edu/report-a-problem.
