Request and Install Softphone

  1. Visit the Softphone service page to Request a Softphone.
  2. Once you receive confirmation the softphone has been enabled for you, download the Cisco Jabber application.
  3. Run the installation process.

Sign In

  1. Launch the Jabber application.
  2. Enter your netid@uic.edu then select Continue.

  3. Enter your UIC Password.
  4. Select Sign In.

Hub Window Navigation

  1. User: Displays signed in user
  2. Search or call bar: Type a number to place a call or search your contacts, recent, and directory by name or user ID.
  3. Number Pad: Dial a number
  4. Recent calls: View recent calls
  5. Meetings
  6. Voicemail: Manage voicemails
  7. Phone Controls: Switch between computer and desk phone modes or modify other phone service settings.

Task Bar Navigation

Right-click the Jabber icon in your Windows taskbar for shortcuts to:

  • Sign Out
  • Exit Cisco Jabber

Customize My Client


Navigate to Menu. Select the File menu and then select Options.

  • General – Jabber startup options
  • Audio – Configure preferred audio devices
  • Video – Configure preferred camera
  • Calendar – Choose calendar integration or disable
  • Calls – Choose to start calls with video
  • Notifications - Configure notifications and sounds
  • Video Device – Automatically connect to nearest video device
  • Accounts – Verify credentials
  • Self Care Portal – Navigate to UCM user portal
  • Appearance – Personalize themes. Can change to classic Jabber view

 

Changing Audio Options

In the Options menu, select Audio in the left column of the Options window.

1. Choose which device to use for your Ringer, Speaker, and Microphone. You can also test the sound from this window.

Changing Video Camera

In the Options menu: 

  1. Select Video in the left column of the Options window.
  2. Choose which device to use for your Camera.

Calendar Integrations

In the Options menu

  1.  Select Calendar in the left column of the Options window.

To disable the calendar integration

  1. Choose None. Setting will not take effect until Jabber is reset.
  2. Choose Menu, and select Exit.
  3. Relaunch Jabber client.

Using Calling Features

Answering Calls

Incoming Jabber calls will display a notification on your screen. You might choose to Answer or Decline (sends call to voicemail). 

When the call is active, the interaction window appears.

While on an active call, the following options are available:

Placing Calls

From the Search or call box:

1. Use the numpad (from recent calls tab), or



2. Type the phone number, or 

3. Type the URI, or

4. Search for a contact.

5. Press Enter or select the green phone button to place the call.

6. When the call is active, the interaction window appears.

Video Calls

When video is available, calls might disable video by default. Video can be enabled for all calls by default via the Options menu.

In the Options menu, select Calls in the left column of the Options window.

  1. Select Always start calls with video.
  2. Select Apply, and OK.

To enable or disable video for an active call:

  1. From the interaction window select "Start video" or "Stop video" button.

Call History

The Recents tab provides a listing of all calls you have made, received, or missed.

  1. Use the View and Type filter at the top of the tab to change the type of the calls displayed.

Voice Messages

The Voice Messages tab displays your voice messages in an interactive list.

When you receive a voice message, you will see indication on the voicemail tab and the new voice messages will be displayed in bold.

1. Select the Play button on the message to listen to the voicemail.

2. Click the play bar to navigate to any point in the voice message. Use the Pause button to pause playback.

3. If the message is from someone in your company, you will be able to view the presence information for that person.

4. Right click on a voice message to Call Back, Forward, Mark as Read or Unread, or Delete the message.

Telephone Options

Jabber allows you to communicate via the following methods:

1. Use my computer for calls (default): allows Jabber to work as a soft phone and use your computer’s microphone and speaker for phone calls.

2. Use my desk phone for calls: allows Jabber to control your desk phone. When in desk phone Mode, when you place or receive calls using your Jabber client, your Cisco IP Phone will automatically go on speaker phone mode or headset mode when the call starts.

3. Forward Calls: allows Jabber to set your call forward all setting.

4. Disable phone services: turns off phone control and prevents incoming calls via Jabber to set your call forward settings.

Display your options by navigating to the bottom left corner of the client, then select the computer icon and a menu will appear. 

  • You can switch between computer and desk phone by clicking on the option.

Advanced Features

Video Default Action

Jabber video is disabled by default. You may enable it to auto-start video on calls where video is available.

1. Navigate to Menu, select the File menu, select Options and select the Calls tab.

2. To change the default behavior, select Always start calls with video. When Never start calls with video is selected, you will be able to manually add video to calls as required.

2. Restart Browser.

3. Highlight and right-click on any phone number that is displayed in the browser. Select Call with Jabber > Call
