How long can I keep my accounts after I leave UIC?

Overview

When a student graduates or leaves the university, or when a faculty or staff member's employment ends, access to UIC email accounts and Technology Solutions computing resources is not removed immediately. Instead, access is retained for a limited grace period to allow time to transition important communications, files, and services to another provider.

Email and Account Access After Separation

Access to UIC email services and Technology Solutions accounts remains available for a designated grace period following separation from the university. The length of access depends on an individual's affiliation with UIC.                                                                                                                                       

Relationship to UIC Grace period
            

Student

            		             
  • One full term after class registration ends.          
  • For example, a student who was last registered for the Spring 2020 term will retain their UIC NetID, email address and access to services throughout the Fall 2020 term. 
            
Faculty and Staff
  • 90 days after employment ends

Important

  • Technology Solutions does not provide UIC NetIDs and access to services for persons who have graduated and are no longer affiliated with the University.
  • Extensions are only available for 2-week periods to allow former students, faculty, and staff enough time to retrieve data and notify their contacts of their new non-UIC email addresses.

What to do During the Grace Period

During this period, clients are encouraged to:

  • Update email addresses associated with personal accounts and subscriptions.
  • Save or transfer important files and data.
  • Notify contacts of their new email address.
  • Review any university services that may be impacted when access expires.

Alumni Email Forwarding for Life

Students who graduated from UIC in Spring 2020 or later may be eligible to participate in the Alumni Email Forwarding for Life program. This service allows email sent to a graduate's UIC email address to be automatically forwarded to a personal email account after graduation.
