Body
Overview
When a student graduates or leaves the university, or when a faculty or staff member's employment ends, access to university IT resources is not removed immediately. Instead, access remains available for a limited grace period based on the individual's affiliation with UIC.
The grace period gives individuals time to transition important communications, files, and services to another provider.
Once the grace period ends, the individual's university accounts and associated data are permanently deleted. This deletion cannot be reversed or recovered!
Email and Account Access After Separation
The length of the grace period depends on an individual's relationship with UIC.
| Relationship to UIC |
Grace period |
|
Student
|
- One full term after class registration ends.
- For example, a student who was last registered for the Spring 2026 term will retain their UIC NetID, email address and access to services throughout the Fall 2026 term.
|
| Faculty and Staff |
- 90 days after employment ends
|
What to do During the Grace Period
Use the grace period to prepare for the loss of access. We recommend that you:
-
Save or transfer important files and data you need to keep.
- Download or retain important emails and other information you may need after your university accounts are removed.
- Update the email address associated with personal accounts, subscriptions, and other services.
- Notify contacts of your new email address.
- Review university services that may be affected when your university accounts expire.
- Review third party services that may be affected when your university accounts expire.
What Happens When the Grace Period Ends?
When the grace period expires:
- UIC accounts are removed
- Access to UIC IT services ends
- Data associated with the account is permanently deleted. Deleted account data cannot be recovered or restored.
Do not wait until the end of the grace period to retrieve your data. Individuals are responsible for saving or transferring any files, emails, contacts, or other information they need before their access expires.
Important
- Technology Solutions does not provide UIC NetIDs or continued access to services for individuals who have graduated or are no longer affiliated with UIC.
- A single 2-week extension may be available to provide additional time to retrieve data and notify contacts of a new, non-UIC email address. An extension does not change the requirement to transition data before the account is permanently deleted.
- Access to UIC accounts and resources cannot be provided to family members, partners, next of kin, or other third parties, including individuals holding power of attorney.
Alumni Email Forwarding for Life
Students who graduated from UIC in Spring 2020 or later may be eligible to participate in the Alumni Email Forwarding for Life program.
This service allows email sent to a graduate's UIC email address to be automatically forwarded to a personal email account after graduation.
Email forwarding does not preserve the UIC account or its data. The UIC account and associated data are still subject to the applicable grace period and deletion requirements.
