Purpose
This guide outlines the complete steps required to retire and surplus an Apple computer at The College of Education, ensuring proper data sanitization, record deletion, and physical handling.
Workflow Overview
All steps must be completed before the machine is considered officially surplused. The final confirmation is handled by the RetiredCollector process.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Data Sanitization
- Mechanical Hard Drive: Use DBAN
- Solid State Drive (SSD): Use Disk Utility
- Delete MTM Portal Record
- Search for the computer in the MTM portal.
- Click the computer name to open the Edit Computer window.
- Click Delete Computer, then Confirm Delete.
- Delete MunkiReport Record
- Go to Listings → Clients in MunkiReport.
- Search by serial number.
- Click Edit above the search field.
- Click the red X next to each record (no bulk delete available).
- Delete Workspace ONE Record
- Log in to Workspace ONE Console.
- Go to Devices → List View.
- Search by computer name or serial number.
- Check the box next to the device → More Actions → Admin → Delete Device.
- Enter deletion reason → Click Next.
- Enter your security PIN when prompted.
- Delete Munki Manifest
- Open MunkiAdmin and connect to your Munki repo.
- Go to the Manifests tab and locate the manifest.
- Right-click (or Ctrl-click) → Delete manifest.
- Click Save to apply changes to the MTM server.
- Delete Active Directory (AD) Entry – If Applicable
- Add to Surplus List
- Add the machine's information to the latest surplus list.
- Fill Wipe Tag & Attach to Machine
- Complete the wipe tag and physically attach it to the machine.
- Place in Surplus Closet
