About the Lines
ITS is responsible for working with units/departments to setup fax lines.
Fax lines have operated at a nominal cost to units/departments for many years. In an effort to clean up unused lines and offer more modern functionality ITS will be transitioning fax lines from plain old telephone (POTS) Centrex lines to Internet Protocol (IP) lines. This transition is necessary because the cost of the Centrex lines has gone up in price where we can no longer offer this service at $25/month. Additionally, AT&T is likely to end support for these lines. Due to those factors, a transition is needed.
We need your input to help this transition go smoothly. All current fax line users should click the button for the Fax Line Survey and complete the survey so that we can make the transition properly starting May 1, 2025.
If you currently have a fax line, it is critical that you complete the Fax Line Survey so that we can take the appropriate action (either retire your fax line or migrate it). If we do not hear from you by April 11, we will assume you are keeping your fax line. We will migrate the fax line and the new charge of $40/month will start May 1.
Effective May 1, 2025 the cost for fax lines will increase to $40/month. The increase is to cover the cost of providing fax service to the campus. Please answer the following questions so that ITS can provide the appropriate service for your unit.
Units / Departments are responsible for cost associated with faxing:
- Current cost is $25/mo.
- Cost for faxing increases to $40/month effective May 1, 2025
- Units are responsible for purchasing an appropriate fax machine or take advantage of virtual faxing
- Virtual faxing allows you to send/receive faxes through a website or application; no physical machine is needed. This is a nice option if your fax machine is reaching end of life and you don’t want to buy a new one.
Note: If you have only occasional faxing needs, you may want to reach out to another unit to see if you can partner with them to share a fax line/cost. Virtual faxing may not be the best option for shared faxing due to confidentiality concerns. You would want to discuss any concerns with the unit(s) you are sharing with. You may contact Sadie Furman in ITS if you would like the contact information for other units/departments with fax lines.
