What Is It?
Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), also referred to as 2-Factor Authentication (2FA), is a method of confirming your claimed identity. With MFA, you need “something you know” (NetID/password) along with “something you possess” (mobile device or security key). When you log in to a system requiring MFA, you will need to authenticate that it is you with a push notification, passcode, or biometric on the device you set up with Duo.

Two Factor Authentication, Duo
Features
MFA will protect both you and the university from unauthorized access to your personal (or university) data stored in the university's enterprise systems. MFA provides a second layer of security to your University account, making it difficult for an unauthorized person to access your information. MFA provides better account protection than using a password alone. If your password is stolen or compromised, having MFA set up will require the thief to also have possession of your registered device in order to access your account. Merely having your password is no longer enough to change your personal information.
Requirements
Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is required for access to many university applications and services. If you would like to add this additional layer of protection to your account, you may enroll through the NetID Center.
Note: MFA enrollment is permanent and cannot be removed once enabled. You will be required to use MFA for all applications that support or require it, and the number of university applications requiring MFA will continue to increase over time.
Who Is Eligible?
Where Can I Get It?
Select the Manage MFA button located on this page to access the University of Illinois NetID Center where you can register for and manage your 2FA preferences.
How Do I Use It?
Here is a MFA quick guide to help you get started.
How Much Does It Cost?
The University does not charge for Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). To use MFA, individuals must either have access to a compatible mobile device capable of running the supported MFA app or obtain a supported security key. Supported security keys may be purchased through the Webstore using either a personal credit card or a departmental CFOAP account, or from an authorized reseller of a supported security key model.
