Google NotebookLM

What Is It?

Google NotebookLM is an AI-powered personalized research assistant that acts as a virtual thinking partner. Unlike general AI chatbots, NotebookLM is "source-grounded," meaning it relies strictly on the documents, notes, slides, and URLs uploaded by the user to summarize content, answer complex questions, and generate ideas with direct citations to the source material.

Where Can I Get It?

As a first step for all AI tools, individuals must opt in to using these tools by reviewing and accepting the UIC AI Risk Acceptance Terms via Opt In to UIC AI Tools.

Once your opt-in request has been processed, you will be able to access NotebookLM at Google Workspace.

How Do I Use It?

Upload your course materials, PDFs, Google Docs, or research links, and try one of these tasks:

  • Generate a deep-dive, podcast-style "Audio Overview" or summary of these dense texts.
  • Create an interactive study guide, dynamic FAQ, or a targeted quiz based strictly on my uploaded materials.
  • Map out structural connections and outline the topic architecture for my upcoming research project.

You can ask follow-up questions to interact directly with your documents. NotebookLM grounds its answers with clear citations from your sources, but always review the provided citations to verify accuracy.

Also, refer to the Google AI for Education at UIC website for additional information, workshops, and guides.
