How can I use Zoom in classrooms for synchronous teaching?

Zoom can be used in classrooms along with a webcam and/or document camera (if applicable). If a classroom has a synchronous supported document camera, you can use it as you normally would and both the Zoom meeting participants and students present in class will be able to see the doc cam. You can also share files such as PowerPoint presentations, Word documents, PDFs, and contents on a browser, as well as sharing your entire screen.

1. Start Zoom:

A. Start Zoom by double-clicking on the Zoom application icon and login to your account.

2. Open Settings:

A. Click the settings button to select the video source input (document camera/webcam).

3. Video Input Settings:

A. Select the "Video" tab to get to view the video input settings.
B. If the room is equipped with a compatible document camera or webcam, it will show under "camera". Click on the drop-down arrow to select the input source you wish to use. OX-1 is the portable document camere used here - the name will be different in the classroom.

C. A live preview of the input will be displayed.
D. Uncheck "Mirror my video" to stop your image/video from being flipped.
E. If you need to rotate your video/image, click on the "Rotate 90 deg" on to top right corner of the live video preview.

4. Audio Input Settings:

A. Select the Audio tab to adjust your audio setting.
B. Your available microphone input devices will show under the "Microphone" tab. Click the drop down arrow to select your microphone input. For rooms that have its bodypack microphone routed to the computer system, it'll show there and you can use that instead of the webcam microphone. If it does not, you'll need to use the microphone from the webcam.

C. Test your microphone by speaking into it and see if the "Input Level" moves.

D. Test your speakers by clicking "Test Speaker".

E. Close the Settings window and start your meeting.

Please keep in mind that if in-class students ask a question, you might need to repeat the question closer to the webcam microphone so your Zoom participants can hear. You will need to remain by the lectern as well.

For rooms with its wireless, lectern mic, and student mics routed to the computer, by choosing that input, you may walk around the room and your zoom participants will still be able to hear you.

5. Zoom Meeting View:

A. The document camera input is being shown here. If you've selected to use the webcam, it'll show the webcam input instead.
B. If you would like to quickly change the input (between document camera and webcam) if applicable, click on the arrow next to the "stop video" button and choose your input under "Select a Camera".

6. File/Screen Sharing:

A. Open your power point presentation file or any file you wish to share (PPT, PDF, Word, browsers, etc) and have it minimized or in the background.
B. Click the "Share Screen" button.
C. Your files open will appear under the "Basic" tab. Select the file and click share. If your file contains audio, check the "share computer sound".
D. If you wish to share your entire screen, select "Screen" and click share. Keep in mind you'll have to minimize the Meeting screen as it'll produce a "tunnel effect".
E. Click "share".

7. File/Screen Sharing View:

A. The PPT is being shared and all participants will be able to view. You can start presentation mode as well.
B. Your input source will be shown to the side which you can drag and move around.
