Purchasing and Assigning Licenses for Applications – ASM/Jamf

To purchase licenses from the Apple Store via Apple School Manager (ASM)

  1. Sign into ASM at https://school.apple.com with a user account that has privileges to purchase content.
  2. From vertical menu on the left window pane, click "Apps and Books"
  3. From the list in the middle window pane, choose the App or Book you want to purchase
    • You can also search for an App or a Book using the search field
  4. On the right window pane, select the location from the 'Assign to' drop down list to assign it to your location.
    • In the Quantity box, enter the number of licenses you wish to obtain, then click on the blue "Get" or "Buy" button.
      • The button changes from "Get", for free licenses to "Buy" for licenses that cost money.
      • To pay for a license, you must update your billing information in the Preferences section of ASM.

The availability of licenses depends on the amount purchased:

  • 5000 licenses or fewer are immediately processed
  • 5001 to 19,999 licenses are processed daily after 1:00 PM, Pacific time
  • 20,000 licenses or more are processed daily after 4:00 PM, Pacific time

To assign licenses in Jamf:

This is where you’ll be able to view your licenses and see how many are available/used.

  1. Log into Jamf
  2. Select Devices -> Mobile Device Apps
    1. App licenses that you have purchased will appear here.
  3. Select the name of the purchased application:
    1. In the “General" tab, select the options that you want the application to have
    2. Go to the “Scope” tab and select the Smart Device Group or Device for the applications to be deployed
    3. Go to the “Managed Distribution” Tab and check the “Assigned Content Purchased in Volume” in the “Device Assignments” tab. Also be sure that the correct location is selected for the app deployment in this tab
      1. If the app is not a free app, then you will need to use the “VPP Codes” tab as well as an Excel spreadsheet that lists the codes. For more information, see the VPP Codes Jamf Documentation.
