How can I obtain voicemail service if I am currently on an analog (Centrex) phone line?

As of December 2022, the voicemail system for analog (Centrex) phone lines is no longer available. If you are currently using a Centrex phone line and have a continued need for voicemail service, you will need to be transitioned to our modern Voice-over-IP (VoIP) phone system. You have the choice to either retain your current university phone number or be issued a new phone number. Please be aware that if you need to retain your current campus phone number, our telephony provider (AT&T) currently has a 45-day lead time to convert a phone line from analog (Centrex) to VoIP.

When transitioning to VoIP, you have two solutions available to you.

  1. Softphone - a Softphone (software phone) requires no physical handset and instead can be used with a Windows or macOS computer. This provides added flexibility to make and receive calls from anywhere with an Internet connection and is generally the recommended solution.

  2. Physical Handset - alternatively, a physical VoIP handset can be provided for use in a university location.

To request either of these solutions, please follow the appropriate instructions below.

UI Health Employees

If your university-issued computer is managed by UI Health Information Services (identifiable by a blue UI Health desktop background), visit the UI Health Information Services help portal to submit your request. From there:

  1. Select “I Have a Request”
  2. Select the “Device & Software Needs” category
  3. Select the appropriate Request Type based on the type of phone you are requesting:
    1. For Softphone, select “Jabber”
    2. For a Physical Handset, select "Add Workstation and/or Wired VoIP Phone"
  4. Specify your current Centrex phone number and that you either:
    1. Need to retain this number and have it converted to UI Health VoIP (typically a minimum of 45-day lead time)
      - or -
    2. Wish to disconnect this number and be assigned a new phone number (currently has an approximately 5-day lead time for softphone, or 10-day lead time for physical handsets)

UIC (non-UIH) Employees

For all other staff, please fill out our request form to request either a Softphone or a Physical Handset. Requests for new phone lines are processed within 3 business days, while requests to retain the current campus number currently have a minimum of a 45-day lead time.
