How do I change my Apple ID email address to a personal email?

Tags appleid MDM

Overview

To support the management of university-owned Apple devices, on December 1, 2022, UIC will be linking the @uic.edu email domain for Apple IDs to the university's authentication system. As a result, any Apple ID that currently uses an @uic.edu email address will need to transition to a personal email address.

Individuals owning an Apple ID associated with a UIC email address will receive an email notification from Apple, informing them of the need to rename their Apple ID. If the Apple ID is not updated within 60 days, the Apple ID will be automatically changed to a temporary email address as described below.

Apple ID Data

Changing the email address on an Apple ID only changes the Apple ID that other people see when sharing items with you, and the email address that Apple uses to contact you about your account. UIC does not have access to your data, and your data will be kept with your Apple ID whether or not you change the email address associated with your account.

This data includes any content you may store in iCloud such as photos, videos and documents, as well as any App Store, iTunes Store and Apple Books purchases, or Apple Music subscriptions. Sign in on your devices with your updated Apple ID email address to continue using iCloud, the App Store, iTunes Store, Apple Books, Apple Pay, iMessage, FaceTime, Find My, and more.

Updating an Apple ID email address

Updating an Apple ID email address is quick and easy.

  • Follow the instructions provided in Change your Apple ID.
  • Log in using the @uic.edu email address provided in the notification from Apple.
    • Note: If it is after January 30, 2023 log in using NetID-uic.edu@temporary.appleid.com instead of NetID@uic.edu.
  • For the updated email address, choose a personal email address (e.g. @icloud.com, @outlook.com, @gmail.com, etc).

Effects of Not Updating an Apple ID email address

After 30 days

If the Apple ID email address is not updated within 30 days of the initial notification from Apple, services associated with your Apple ID such as iMessage and FaceTime may become inactive until you change the Apple ID email address.

After 60 days

If the Apple ID email address is not updated within 60 days of the initial notification from Apple, the Apple ID will automatically be changed to a temporary username in the format of NetID-uic.edu@temporary.appleid.com. To update the Apple ID email address after this change, simply sign in with the temporary Apple ID and change the Apple ID email address.
