How do I check accessibility in Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides using Grackle?

Overview

Grackle is an accessibility checker that integrates with Google Docs to help identify and resolve accessibility issues before sharing content with others. It evaluates documents against accessibility best practices and provides guidance on how to fix common issues that may affect individuals using assistive technologies.

Using Grackle can help improve the accessibility of your documents and support compliance with digital accessibility requirements, including the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 AA.

Before you Begin

  • A Google account is required.
  • Grackle must be installed and available in your Google Workspace environment.

Installing Grackle

To install Grackle:

  1. Open a Google DocGoogle Sheet, or Google Slide
  2. Go to Extensions → Add-ons → Get add-ons
  3. Search for “Grackle” and install the appropriate extension
Please note:
  • Each extension (Grackle Docs, Grackle Sheets, Grackle Slides) must be installed separately.
  • All requested permissions/access boxes should be approved during installation.

Running an Accessibility Check

Once installed, you can access the accessibility checker by going to Extensions → Grackle Docs/Sheets/Slides → Launch.

  1. In the Grackle panel, select Check Document.
  2. Grackle will scan your document and display any accessibility issues it identifies.
  3. Review the list of findings.
