Data migration from one computer to another may be needed for different scenarios. Scenarios can include when a user is moving from one computer to a new computer, the drive on the computer is starting to fail, the computer itself is needing repair and needs to be sent in to the manufacturer, or a number of other possibilities.
ITS will assist in the data migration process as much as possible. We recommend that all users at UIS take advantage of our cloud storage solutions, primarily Box for backing-up their data.

Migrating data Using Box
When preparing to migrate data from one device to another, utilizing Box and it's free app -- Box Drive -- is a very effective method. To do this you will start by making sure that you have claimed your Box account and have installed Box Drive. Once this is completed, users can start the process of moving data from their computer to Box using the drag and drop method of moving files/folders from their current home on the local computer to their new home on the Box cloud. Migration Process when User's Device is Having Issues
When ITS has to assist in the data migration process, we will utilize Box in many of the situations. ITS will need access to the user's device and will utilize different methods of migrating the data depending on the situation. In some cases we will login to the device utilizing an Administrator account and copy the data from the local device to a Box folder that will then be shared with the user. In other cases, we will need to remove the hard-drive from the device and utilize a special dock in that will then allow use to copy the data from the hard-drive to a Box folder that is then shared with the user.
Migration Process when User is Receiving a New Desktop Refresh Computer
At the time of scheduling delivery or pickup of a new desktop refresh computer the user can request data transfer. ITS will give directions for what users need to do when transferring from desktop to desktop. ITS uses our end point management tool to migrate users data when this process is requested.
Users that are migrating from a laptop to a laptop are encouraged to migrate their own data using Box, so that it reduces the amount of time the user is without their device. If a user does not choose to do their own migration then ITS will need the old laptop brought to the Help Desk so that the transfer can be completed.
