Overview
The Travel Cell Phones for Researchers service offering provides temporary mobile devices to UIC research personnel for university-approved research-related travel to particular high-risk destinations.
Requestor Responsibilities
- Submit request at least 2 to 3 weeks prior to travel.
- Requestor must be physically present and provide their valid UIC i-card and sign a Loaner Device Agreement to check out equipment
- Identify and install preferred navigation and translation apps based on travel destination.
- Requestors are strongly discouraged from storing personal or sensitive data on loaner devices.
- Return the device in good working condition by the agreed deadline.
- Report any loss, damage, or malfunction promptly.
- Requestor is required to submit a police report to the UIC Police immediately upon loss/theft of equipment and to provide the police report number to Technology Solutions within 24 hours. Technology Solutions will initiate a remote lock/wipe.
Device Configuration
Devices will be configured in accordance with university policies and best practices:
- Remote configuration of security settings based on guidelines set by the Security & Privacy team
- Pre-installation of Duo Mobile (2FA) and Cisco Secure Client (VPN).
- App installation restrictions, including the exclusion of Box Sync/Box Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, Google Drive, and Microsoft Outlook applications
- Enforced encryption and screen lock policies.
- Remote wipe capabilities in case of loss or theft.
- Devices are updated to the latest OS version prior to checkout.
Support
Network/Carrier support is available via Verizon, the university's contracted cell service provider. Due to time zone differences, any further technical support for the device is best-effort only. Requestors are encouraged to fully test the device before traveling.
Returning the Device
Individuals must return the device by the agreed deadline. Device should be placed into airplane mode prior to bringing to campus. Upon return, Technology Solutions will inspect and then securely wipe the device.
