How do I remove or release a device from Jamf, ASM, or the organization?

This article explains how to remove the devices from Jamf, Apple School Manager and the Organization. 

Removing a device from Jamf

  1. Log into Jamf.

  2. Determine the type of device (computer or mobile device) and select the correct tab in Jamf to manage it.

  3. Locate the device you wish to remove via smart group or through an inventory search.

  4. Select the device, go into the “Management” Tab.

    Note: This next step will require you to completely wipe the device. ​​​​Be sure to move any necessary files the user wants to keep to Microsoft One Drive, a shared drive, or a personal storage device the user provides.
    • Note: THIS METHOD WILL COMPLETELY WIPE THE DEVICE AND IT CANNOT BE RECOVERED.
  5. Under “Management Commands”, select “Wipe Device”.

  6. After the device is wiped, locate the PreStage Enrollment profile that the device was staged in and remove it from the profile as well.

Removing a Device from the PreStage Enrollment Profile

  1. Locate the device you wish to remove via smart group or through an inventory search.

  2. On the left column, select “PreStage Enrollments”.

  3. Select the PreStage Enrollment profile that the device is enabled in.

  4. Select “Edit” at the bottom right corner.

  5. Select the “Scope” tab at the top of the middle page next to “Options”.

  6. Search to remove the desired device by the serial number and unchecking the checkbox.

    • Note: you may have a lot of devices listed, change the view settings at the bottom as needed.

  7. Select “Save” at the bottom.

Removing a Device from the Mobile Device Management (MDM) Server in Apple School Manager (ASM)

  1. Log into Apple School Manager (ASM). 

    1. If you do not have access to ASM, please see the following Article.

  2. Select the “Devices” tab on the left hand side.

  3. Enter the serial number of the device you wish to remove from the “MDM Server” in the search bar at the top.

  4. Select and confirm the device is in your managed MDM.

    1. If the device is not managed by your MDM, please visit Article.

  5. At the top select “Edit MDM Server”.

    1. A pop up will display to either “Assign” or “Unassign” the device.

    2. Select Unassign.

    3. Repeat the steps as needed per device.

  6. The device has now been removed from the MDM server. This device is now considered “Unmanaged” meaning it will no longer be managed in Jamf. You can either transfer it to another department or release it from the Organization.

Releasing a Device from the Organization

 *Note this option is to ONLY be used if the device is being released to a user as a personal device.

  1. Please start at the beginning of this article if you have not removed the device from Jamf and the MDM Server in ASM.

  2. After the device has been wiped and removed from both Jamf and the MDM Server in ASM, log into ASM.

  3. Select the “Devices” tab on the left hand side.

  4. Enter in the serial number of the device you want to remove.

    1. It should say “Unmanaged.”

  5. At the top select Release from Organization.

  6. This device is now free to give to the designated user.
