End-User Quick Reference for Jabber for Mac 14.0(1) – Phone Only

Request and Install Softphone
- Visit the Softphone service page to Request a Softphone.
- Once you receive confirmation the softphone has been enabled for you, download the Cisco Jabber application.
- Run the installation process.
Sign-In
- Launch the Jabber application.
- Enter your netid@uic.edu then select Continue.
- Enter your UIC Password then select Sign-In.
Menu & Preferences
- Profile and preferences: View/edit your status, My Profile, and preferences.
- Menu: Access/Personalize your settings.
- Search or call bar: Type a number to place a call or search your contacts, recent, and directory by name or user ID.
- Access your features
- Phone Controls: Switch between computer and desk phone modes or modify other phone service settings.
- Connect to a Device
Task Bar Navigation
Right-click the Jabber icon in your dock for shortcuts to:
- Options
- Show All Windows
- Hide
- Quit
Customize My Client

Select Jabber in the menu bar and then select Preferences
Changing Audio Options
- In the Preferences menu, select Audio/Video in the top row of the Preferences window.
- Choose which device to use for your Ringer, Speaker, and Microphone. You can also test the sound from this window.
Changing Video Camera

In the top row of the Preferences window.

Choose which device to use for your Camera.
Answering Calls
- Incoming Jabber calls will display a notification on your screen. You might choose to reply via Chat, Answer, or Decline (sends call to voicemail).
- When the call is active, the interaction window appears.
- While on an active call, the following options are available

Placing Calls
From the Search or call box
- Type the phone number or
- Type the URI or
- Search for a contact.
- Under the Recent Tab, select the Keypad option to the right and either type/click the number to dial.
- Press Enter or select to place the call.
- When the call is active, the interaction window appears.
Video Calls
When video is available, calls might disable video by default. Video can be enabled for all calls by default via the Preferences menu. In the Preferences menu, select Calls in the top row of the Preferences window.
- Select Always start calls with video.
- Select Apply, and OK.
Call History
The Recent tab provides a listing of all calls you have made, received, or missed.
- Use the All, Placed, Received, and Missed Calls filter at the top of the tab to change the type of calls displayed.
Voicemail
The Voicemail tab displays your voice messages in an interactive list.
When you receive a voice message, you will see an indication on the tab and the new voice messages will be displayed in bold.
- Select the Play button on the message to listen to the voicemail.
- Click the play bar to navigate to any point in the voice message. Use the Pause button to pause playback.
- If the message is from someone in your company, you will be able to view the presence information for that person.
- Right click on a voice message to Call Back, Start Chat, Start Meeting, Send Email, Mark as Read or Unread, Forward voice message or Delete the message.
Telephone Options
Jabber allows you to communicate via the following methods by clicking in the bottom left corner of Jabber and selecting each option:
- Use my computer for calls (default): allows Jabber to work as a soft phone and use your computer’s microphone and speaker for phone calls.
- Use my desk phone for calls: allows Jabber to control your desk phone. When in desk phone Mode, when you place or receive calls using your Jabber client, your Cisco IP Phone will automatically go on speaker phone mode or headset mode when the call starts.
- Disable phone services to: turns off phone control and prevents incoming calls via Jabber to set your call forward settings
- Single Number Reach: allows Jabber to choose numbers from the available single number reach destinations or disable the feature.
- Forward Calls to your voicemail or a new number.
Advanced Features
Connect to a Video Device that is Proximity Enabled
- Click on Connect to a Device at the bottom of the window
- Allow Jabber to search for nearby devices and select the device once it is found.
Setting Jabber as default Chat and Audio Application
- Navigate to the menu bar, select the Jabber menu, select Preferences and select the General tab.
- Select Cisco Jabber as the default call and chat client.
Multi-line Support
Allows users to perform various tasks using more than one configured line or phone number.
- To change to a line other than the first line, simply click on the Line 1 icon near the right of the search bar and select a different line.
Video Default Action
Jabber video is disabled by default. You may enable it to auto-start video on calls where video is available.
- Navigate to Jabber Menu, select the Preferences, select the Calls tab
- To change the default behavior, select Always start calls with video.
- When Never start calls with video is selected, you will be able to manually add video to calls as required.
Viewing Transferred Files
Jabber will automatically save your file transfer history to Documents\MyJabberFiles
- Choose a user folder to view your file transfers with that user.
Click to Call with Google Chome
- Install Jabber Call extension: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/category/extensions
- Restart Browser.
- Highlight and right-click on any phone number that is displayed in the browser. Select Call with Jabber > Call
