Environment
- Apple Silicon Macs (M1, M2, M3, M4, M5 family)
- Managed by Education IT Partners (College of Education)
- FileVault 2 disk encryption enabled and completed
Prerequisites
- Recovery key: You must obtain a FileVault recovery key from Education IT Partners before starting this process.
- Encryption: FileVault 2 encryption must have completed on the Mac.
Steps to Reset Your Password
- Shut down your Mac.
If your Mac is stuck on the login screen, press and hold the power button until it turns off.
- Enter macOS Recovery.
Press and hold the power button to turn your Mac back on. Keep holding the button until you see Options on the screen.
- Click Options, then click Continue.
- On the next screen, click Forgot all passwords?
- Enter the FileVault recovery key provided by Education IT Partners, then click Next.
- Click Reset Password.
- Select your user account.
- Enter and verify your new password, then click Next.
- Click Exit to Recovery.
- Click the Apple logo in the upper-left corner and choose Restart.
What to Expect After Reset
- You will use your new password to log in to your Mac.
- This process changes only your local Mac account password. It does not change your NetID password or other campus services.
