Linking course content in Canvas

The following guide is meant to help you link to Canvas content (pages, assignments, files, etc.) in different places in your course. By following this method, your links to course content will not break on a course copy.

  1. Go to the page in your course where you want to create the link.
  2. Highlight the text you want to link.
  3. Click on the link icon in the menu above the textbox. Icon appears as a chain link.

  4. From the two options that appear, choose Course Link.

  5. This will bring up a menu on the right. Use the dropdown at the top of this menu to choose between Links (course content you've created directly in Canvas) or Files (documents you've uploaded to Canvas).

  6. If you choose Links, you will see a list of all the types of content you can add a link to.

  7. You can click on any of these options to expand the list, letting you see the content you've created in Canvas in that category. The exception is Course Navigation, which will show you a list of links that appear in the course navigation on the left side of your Canvas course.

  8. If you choose Files, you will see a list of folders that have been created for your course.

  9. You can click into any of these folders to expand them, seeing what files are contained within that folder.

  10. Once you find the content you would like to link to the highlighted text, you can click on that piece of content in the menu on the right, and the link will be applied to the highlighted text.
  11. If you are linking multiple pieces of content on the same page, you do not need to close the menu each time. You can skip steps 1-4, and you can start at step 5 to add additional links.
