How do I map my webhost account as a Network Share on Windows?

No additional software is needed to map your webhost.uic.edu account as a network share, but if you are connecting from an off-campus location you will need to connect to the UIC Virtual Private Network (VPN) first.

No additional software is needed to map your webhost.uic.edu account as a network share, but if you are connecting from an off-campus location you will need to connect to the UIC Virtual Private Network (VPN) first.
 

Right-click on your Desktop. 

Select New then Shortcut.

In the dialog, type in \\webhost.uic.edu\site-name where site-name is the name of your site (for example: demo) in the location field. 

Click Next.

You will be prompted to log in using your UIC credentials. 

Note: If you are in an Technology Solutions computer lab, or connected to Active Directory, you will not be prompted to authenticate. 

Type in ad\NetID (where NetID is your UIC NetID) for the username and your UIC common password.

In the next dialog, you can set a name for your shortcut. The default name of the shortcut will be webhost.uic.edu. Double-click on the newly created shortcut.

Once successfully authenticated, your webhost.uic.edu account will be mapped in the Network section of Windows Explorer's sidebar.

Troubleshooting

If you are using Windows 10 and receive the error message: "The file \\people.uic.edu\NetID cannot be found.", 

go to Control Panel->Programs->Turn Windows features on or off->SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support 

then turn on SMB 1.0/CIFS Client and restart the computer.
