Overview
If you are unable to access your current Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) device, you can generate a temporary bypass code and use it to sign in. Once signed in, you can add a new MFA device to your account.
This article provides instructions on how to:
- Generate a temporary bypass code.
- Add a new MFA device to your account.
Before You Begin
- You must know your NetID and password.
- You must have access to your account credentials.
- An Internet connection is required.
Step 1: Generate a Temporary Bypass Code
- Go to the MFA management portal
- Sign in with your NetID and password.
- Follow the prompts to access your account management options.
- Select the option to generate a Temporary Bypass Code.
- Copy or securely save the bypass code provided.
Note: Bypass codes are temporary and intended for short-term use when you do not have access to your registered authentication device.
Step 2: Sign In Using the Bypass Code
- Navigate to the application or service you are trying to access.
- Enter your NetID and password.
- When prompted for MFA verification, select the option to use a Bypass Code.
- Enter the temporary bypass code generated in Step 1.
- Complete the sign-in process.
Step 3: Add a New MFA Device
After successfully signing in with the bypass code:
- Open the MFA device enrollment KnowledgeBase article.
- Follow the instructions provided in the article to register a new authentication device.
- Complete the enrollment process for your preferred authentication method, such as:
- Microsoft Authenticator
- Smartphone app
- Hardware token (if applicable)
- Other supported MFA methods

Verify that the new device successfully receives and approves MFA requests.
Step 4: Verification
After adding the new device:
- Sign out of your account.
- Sign back in using your NetID and password.
- Approve the MFA prompt using the newly enrolled device.
- Confirm successful access to University services.
Troubleshooting
Unable to Generate a Bypass Code
- Verify your NetID and password are correct.
- Try an alternate browser.
- Contact your departmental IT support team if the issue persists.
