What do I need to do before backup client installation?

This article details the steps needed before installing a client-specific network backup client.

There are some steps you need to perform before actually installing your client specific network backup client which include registering your node, setting up your password, and making sure you know what your personalized hostname is.

Registering your node

The network backup server requires an account name, called a "node name", and a password to access your backed-up files which is separate from your UIC common password. This is to ensure that nobody except you can restore them. To obtain a Node Name, send email to datasave@uic.edu describing the machine you need to have backed up and who is responsible for it. You will be asked to fill in missing details by return email.

  1. The name of your machine. If it's a server accessed by others, this could be the name its users use to access it. This name will typically be of the form (machine).(dept).uic.edu or (machine).ad.uic.edu. This may match its DNS name, but that is not a requirement. A static IP address is not required to use backup.
  2. The name and netid of its responsible administrator, and an alternate name.
  3. Its operating system, in general. We do not need patch levels - names like "Windows 10", "Mac OS 10.11", or "Red Hat Linux 6" are sufficiently detailed.
  4. The approximate size of its disks. Round numbers are sufficiently detailed. There is no limit, within reason.
  5. Any specific special mounted filesystems or drives that need to be backed up.
  6. Would you like a daily email each morning saying if the backup worked or not? To what email address(es)? (You can change your mind either way later.)

If your node name is already registered, you won't have to re-register.

  • If you are installing the new version over your old one and if you previously used Password Generate, the stored password from your old version will also allow you to log into the new one.
  • Otherwise, while you are configuring your client, you will be asked to login. When the login dialog box opens, type your node name for your User ID, type your password, and click Login.


When your node name is created, you will be sent a temporary one-time password. You will be required to change it to something strong and secret the first time you use it.  Under some conditions, it may simply make up a new random password for you. Don't worry - as long as you are using the Password Generate feature (described elsewhere) you do not need to remember it or even to know it.

When would you need to reset your password?

  • During initial setup if changing that one-time password does not work for any reason
  • If you are doing a full restore due to a disk failure
  • If you are upgrading this machine to new hardware

In either case, you'll need to change it to something that you do know, because you will need it to login, at least initially. Send email to datasave@uic.edu, and a new one-time password will be sent to you.

Personalized Backup Server Hostname

Rather than have to ask people switch to new Technology Solutions Network Backup Service servers again and again as we add new servers, we have given everyone their "own" server associated with their account, with a server hostname of the form:


Nodenames are typically of the form: machine.dept.uic.edu, thus the server name for a machine called  scorpio.astrology.uic.edu is:


Don't remember what your nodename is? No problem; it's in your software's configuration under the General tab in the Preferences menu. The port in all cases is 1500.

Updating existing configuration

First, make sure you have the newest applicable version of the client for your operating system installed. (Some operating systems / servers require specific versions of the software.)

  1. Open the Backups for Server client.
  2. Open the Preferences from the Edit drop-down.
  3. Click on the Communication tab.
  4. Change your Server Address to nodename.adsmserv.uic.edu and nodename is your NetID.adsm1 and change your Server Port to 1500.

  5. Restart either your computer, if you are using the Scheduler on Windows, or
    • Restart the Client Acceptor Daemon, as is done on Macs and Linux or if you are using the Client Acceptor Daemon on Windows.
    • Open the Tools for Administrators and select Stop the Client Acceptor Daemon. Wait for the dialog box saying that it has completed.
    • Open the Tools for Administrators again and select Start Client Acceptor Daemon.
