How do I set my default device & automatic authentication method for Duo 2FA?

Using New Duo Authentication

If accessing Banner, HRFE/PARIS, HR Reporting, My UI Info, or an application using the New Duo Authentication screens (example below):

New Duo Auth screens

  1. Visit Net ID Center -> Select Log in
  2. You will need to login with NetID and password and authenticate with 2FA.
  3. Select Manage my 2FA under 2-Factor Authentication
  4. By selecting the plus icon to the right of your device, you can select a favorite/default device. Manage
     
  5. If you authenticate with more than one device, you can specify the default by selecting the blue star icon.

    NOTE:  You can now make your token your default device.

When You Log In:

Based on the default or favorite device selected, this allows you additional options.

  • Ask me how to authenticate - When authenticating with 2FA, you will be presented with the choice of how to authenticate (phone call, push, text, or passcode) when applicable.  Available for smartphone, tablet, cellular phone, and landline phone.
  • Automatically call - When authenticating with 2FA, the system will automatically call your default device for authentication.  Available for smartphone, tablet, cellular phone, and landline phone.  This can be canceled by selecting cancel this call on the authentication screen and then you can select another method.
  • Automatically Duo Push - When authenticating with 2FA, the system will automatically send a duo push to your default device for authentication.  Available for smartphone and tablets.  This can be canceled by selecting cancel this push on the authentication screen and then you can select another method.


Recovery Email:

It is recommended that all users set up a non-university email address to receive a temporary passcode if you forget or lose your device.  You can receive 24 codes a year and they are good for 3 days (100 authentications). 
 
  • Visit Net ID Center -> Select Log in
  • You will need to login with NetID and password and authenticate with 2FA.
  • Select Edit settings under Recovery Settings
  • Add or update the Non-university email address
     

Using classic DUO

classic DUO Authentication Screen
 
  1. Visit NetID Center -> My 2FA Account
  2. You will need to login with NetID and password
  3. Authenticate if needed
  4. Then visit https://identity.uillinois.edu
  5. Once the Classic iFrame appears, select My Settings & Devices on the left.My Settings and Devices

    2FA Authentication is required.
     
  6. Here you can set your default device and authentication method and select Save

    If you only have 1 device, it is automatically your default. Tokens can not be set as the default in Classic DuoDefaults in Classic
