What can I tell students who have questions about the privacy policy for Respondus Monitor?

Respondus Inc. provides a software service that UIC instructors can use to increase academic integrity during non-proctored, online exams.

The Terms of Use provides explicit details of the information collected during an exam session, and how it is used. Below are some additional details:

  • The video recorded during an exam session is analyzed by an automated system. LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor are fully-automated applications. Respondus doesn’t have a single proctor on staff. They don’t have proctors watching videos in real-time, they don’t have proctors that “drop in” on students during an exam, and they don’t have proctors that review videos and proctoring results after the exam. Respondus provides automated proctoring results to the instructor, and only the instructor can access those results (via Blackboard).

  • The only way to access a video is by using instructor-level (or higher) credentials within Blackboard.

  • Respondus Monitor does not access the student's webcam outside of the examination environment.

  • As soon as the student submits the exam, the camera stops recording and is effectively disconnected from the Respondus application.

  • LockDown Browser prevents access to other applications and files during an exam, but it doesn’t access any of the student’s files or documents, nor does it transmit those files to a Respondus server.

  • Respondus Monitor doesn’t require a student to register/log in directly to the system, nor does Respondus, Inc. store payment or other sensitive information (medical, financial, etc.) that can be linked to a student.

  • Respondus Monitor uses Amazon Web Service (AWS), which is highly rated for its cloud security. Significant effort has gone into the security of Respondus Monitor, and it’s been verified by third-party firms that specialize in penetration testing of server applications.

  • Respondus Monitor has undergone detailed security/privacy reviews by some of the largest distance learning programs in the world. All videos and data are stored within the United States.

  • Additional questions about privacy can be answered at Respondus Privacy Principles.

With specific regards to recording the student’s environment:

  •  Instructors can recommend that students position themselves in front of a blank wall (if possible) or hang a sheet behind them so no other parts of the room are in view.

  • The Environment Check setting in the pre-exam steps is an optional setting; instructors can always disable it if it’s not needed or students aren’t comfortable with it. Most of the time, however, that setting is used to record the desk or table top – to ensure compliance with a closed book exam rule. It’s entirely up to the instructor to determine how to use it.
