Why is Poll Everywhere being removed as a polling tool?

Technology Solutions-LTS is in the last year of the Poll Everywhere pilot program. Once the pilot term expires, May 30th 2020, Technology Solutions will no longer sponsor an enterprise license.

The Technology Solutions sponsored trial of Poll Everywhere will conclude on May 30th 2020. At that time the enterprise features of the Technology Solutions supported version will no longer function.

In 2014, the Personal Computing Device Committee of the ITGC recommended adopting a single Student Response System (SRS) for all colleges in the university, with the overarching goal: to encourage the use of SRS in formative assessment of students by offering it free of charge and utilizing the students’ devices. They also stated at that time:  The current system is not making the best use of either students’ or the university’s financial resources.

This recommendation prompted Technology Solutions to purchase a trial license to Poll Everywhere,develop support resources, and conduct pilot research for faculty adoption of this new tool. When Poll Everywhere was introduced, other SRS systems were already in place at several colleges, largely dominated by iClicker and Turning Point Technologies. The expected outcome was that faculty would convert to a system that was free to students, and would appreciate the direct support provided by Technology Solutions, and in turn, eliminate the use of the other systems.

The research from the pilot during Fall 2015 and Spring 2016 semesters reported favorable experiences from both faculty and students, therefore it was decided to renew the trial license again in Fall 2016. Renewals continued again in 2017, 2018, and 2019. Over this time period, 325 Faculty and staff have tried Poll Everywhere, with a present count of approximately 135 active users logging on in 2019.

As the 2019 renewal period came up, the Technology Solutions-LTS team decided to review the state of the current systems in place at UIC. Though exact figures of how many users and to what degree they used the products was difficult to determine, we were able to determine the number of faculty users for each tool in 2019:  iClicker had about 125 faculty users; Turning Point had 35; and Top Hat had 25. Other systems also adopted during this time period were Learning Catalytics, Socrative, and Kahoot. User figures were not available for these systems, but it is believed they average about 15 to 25 users. During the several years of the trial, only faculty that were not previously using a polling system decided to adopt Poll Everywhere. Only a few faculty members using any of the other polling systems decided to switch to Poll Everywhere.

After careful consideration regarding the cost of moving to an enterprise license, adoption rate, feedback from faculty and instructional designers, and budgetary considerations presented by the availability of polling as part of Echo360, another Technology Solutions supported system the Technology Solutions-LTS team determined that the Poll Everywhere trial should end. Besides the previously mentioned reasons, the consensus from colleges’ representatives currently using a polling system was that attempting to have the whole campus on the same system was not possible. Colleges and departments throughout UIC often make software purchasing decisions based on particular features that are convenient and familiar to their faculty and it is expected that they will continue to favor solutions that are the best fit for their unit without regard to those supported by Technology Solutions.

The Poll Everywhere trial license will be active until May 30th 2020 semester. At that time, all instructor accounts and corresponding polls will continue to be available using the features of the free version. Contact LTS@uic.edu for any questions.
